Always Honor God

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17

Imagine the scenario in Colossae, an ancient city. A young congregation of believers is growing under the shadow of gorgeous mountains, nestled in the Lycus River Valley. False doctrines have started to circulate through the streets, however, undermining the faith of those who have newly converted, much like a breeze that threatens to uproot a budding sapling. These teachings, which are both enticing and deceitful, claim to offer more understanding and a higher spiritual level, but they really undercut the central message of the gospel—that Christ is sufficient and supreme—at their core.

A letter written by Paul, the apostle of Christ, who is well-known but whom you have never met, arrives against this turbulent background. The gathered believers are reminded of their identity in Christ and how this should influence their behavior as they listen intently to each word read aloud from the letter. The advice of the apostles is not a lofty theoretical construct but rather sage advice for daily living that is intended to direct their relationships, choices, and very perception of themselves and others.

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Then, like a clarion call piercing through the mists of confusion, comes the central charge in Colossians 3:17. A call to live your entire life—every word spoken, every action taken—in the authority and character of Jesus, with hearts overflowing with thanksgiving to God, is presented here as a reality that transcends societal changes and the passage of time. This was the rock they needed to stand on in their chaotic environment. Perhaps that is exactly the anchor we also need in ours.

The Meaning of Colossians 3:17

Understanding the context in which Colossians 3:17 was written is essential for fully appreciating its profundity and capacity for transformation. The church in Colossae, a city in Asia Minor, was the recipient of the Epistle to the Colossians, which the apostle Paul wrote while he was imprisoned. False teachings were gaining ground among the congregation and luring people away from the straightforwardness of the gospel and toward legalism, mysticism, and asceticism. In opposition to these doctrines, Paul aimed to reaffirm Christ’s primacy and sufficiency.

Paul reveals the practical ramifications of a Christian life based on the reality of the crucified and risen Christ in the third chapter. He gives the Colossians advice in Colossians 3:2 to fix their thoughts on things above, in Colossians 3:5–9 to get rid of the old self, and in Colossians 3:10–14 to put on the new self.

Colossians 3:17, which is our verse, follows. The phrase “whatever” reflects how thorough our devotion to Christ is. The sacred and the mundane are not separate. The ‘name of the Lord Jesus’ alludes to His stature and persona. The notion is that everything in our lives—from our words to our deeds—should represent the honor, integrity, and purpose of Jesus Christ.

Paul also mentions “giving thanks to God the Father through him” at the same time. Gratitude, an essential Christian virtue, serves as a reminder that we are not independent beings. We owe Him a continual debt of gratitude for everything we have and are as a result of His grace.

The themes of this verse are present throughout the Bible as a whole, not only in Colossians. The Old Testament also shares this attitude, as evidenced in Ecclesiastes 9:10: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” Paul echoes similar views in 1 Corinthians 10:31, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Christ-centered living, which is encouraged in Colossians 3:17, is a joyous manifestation of our connection with God rather than an onerous requirement. We are free to live and behave in response to God’s love rather than as a means of obtaining His favor. Our hearts and brains are being transformed by the Spirit within us, who also causes us to match our desires with those of Christ.

May we be motivated as we consider Colossians 3:17 today to intentionally seek Jesus’ guidance and presence in all of our activities, no matter how big or small, ordinary or remarkable. May we live out our faith in every area of our lives, emulating Christ in our words and deeds, and perpetually expressing our thankfulness for His unfailing love and grace.

Our life will start to reflect His kindness and love as we devote every moment to Him. As a result, our faith will overflow and bless those who are in our immediate vicinity with the healing love of Christ.

Application

The truth of Colossians 3:17 is still valid and necessary in today’s increasingly multicultural and multinational society. Its use in the cultural environment of today can have a significant impact on our private lives, our interpersonal connections, and the world at large.

Work and Professional Life

Regardless of the industry, our work can serve as a platform to reflect Jesus Christ’s principles, personality, and teachings. Acting with honesty, love, and justice can show the transformation Christ provides in our life in a time when workplaces might be tarnished by rivalry, lying, or unethical tactics. Our labor is given significance and purpose when we perceive it as a way to exalt God.

Digital and Social Media Presence

Our words and deeds are not constrained by our physical presence in the digital era. Our digital communications and social media tools pick them up. Do we respect Christ in our online relationships and content sharing? Are we encouraging unity, respect, and truth, or are we fostering conflict, hatred, and misinformation?

Social and Political Engagement

Colossians 3:17 challenges us to let our faith in Jesus shape and direct our perceptions and actions when we participate with societal concerns and politics. In order to reflect Christ’s justice and love, this entails speaking up against injustice, defending the weak, and promoting peace and reconciliation in a polarized society.

Interpersonal Relationships

We have opportunity to implement this verse every day in our relationships, whether they be familial, friendship-based, or romantic. Do our words and deeds demonstrate the compassion, mercy, and humility of Jesus? Do we give thanks to God for the individuals He has placed in our lives?

Consumer Habits

Our shopping decisions—what we buy, from whom, and why—can likewise be put to use. Are we managing the resources that God has given us wisely? Are we taking into account how our decisions may affect the environment, the people who make these products, and the global economy?

In conclusion, Colossians 3:17 provides a life-changing viewpoint for surviving in the modern world. It challenges us to live our lives with the love, discernment, and character of Christ, always with a spirit of thanksgiving toward God. We become living examples of the beauty and power of the Gospel in a world that sorely needs it as we take this to heart.

Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father,

We come to You today with hearts ready to receive Your heavenly direction and grace. We express our gratitude to You for the profundity of Your word, especially Colossians 3:17. We accept the challenge You have placed on us to conduct our life in every way in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Lord, please help us to pay attention to this. Help us to speak with words that reflect the love, kindness, and truth of Jesus. Let His love, humility, and justice shine through in all of our deeds, no matter how small or large. May we reflect the character of Christ to others around us by honoring You in our choices, relationships, and work.

Father, please help us to develop a spirit of thanksgiving as well. Please keep in mind that despite our struggles and victories, You are the source of all good things. Our lives should be filled with gratitude as we recognize Your unfailing love, Your generous provision, and Your ongoing presence among us.

We admit that while acting alone, we err and fall short. However, we are able to live as You have called us to via the power of Your Holy Spirit within us. Remind us of the calling Colossians 3:17 sets on our lives—to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to You, our God and Father—as we enter a new day, a new challenge, a new chance.

In the cherished and mighty name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen, we offer these prayers.

Are there areas of your life where you find it difficult to apply your faith, when the secular tends to take precedence over the sacred? How might your understanding of these topics be altered by the reality of Colossians 3:17?

Faith Challenge

Start each day of the following week with a brief prayer, giving Jesus all the glory for your words and deeds. Ask yourself throughout the day, “Is this word or deed honoring to Jesus?” Finish each day by thinking about and giving appreciation for God’s presence and work in your life.
